After the completion of the program, there are a number of career opportunities available within the company. There are currently over 50 designated CAs working in various areas of our organization that used the experience gained with their CA designation to move into roles such as Merchandising and Marketing, Senior Analyst positions, manager & director roles and even vice president positions. All students are encouraged to pursue any of these careers after completing the CA program at Sobeys Inc.

During your CA training at Sobeys, you will have the opportunity to work in other areas of finance typically unavailable through accounting firm programs. Internal Audit will give you insight into the planning, execution and reporting of various audits that relate to potential organization risks, or working as part of an Internal Reporting & Analysis team you will be responsible for identifying, preparing and analyzing reports to be presented to various levels of management. Working with the Budgeting & Planning group of the organization you will assist in organizing, compiling and preparing the budgets and related analysis for the organization. Practical work experience is a key element in becoming a CA.

The CA program is an intense program and that is why Sobeys assigns each of their students a mentor. These mentors are recent CA graduates themselves and are there for support during the ASCA modules and the UFE (Uniform Evaluation) exam. There are also Counseling Members that will ensure that all students are meeting the requirements for the CA program.

Jenn joined Sobeys in February of 2009 after receiving her CA designation in 2008. She joined the company's IFRS project as a project lead for the National Finance group. Leading up to the adoption of IFRS, Jenn is in charge of ensuring that all external reporting deliverables, such as financial statements and MD&A, are compliant with what is required by the Canadian Securities Administrators. She also has to identify and analyze the key differences between Canadian GAAP and IFRS for Sobeys, which includes developing and managing implementation plans for identified differences. Jenn is currently a CA Student Mentor responsible for supporting CA students by answering any questions that students have, leading in house educational sessions, providing assistance with course material, marking practice simulations, and making sure that students feel that the CA Training Program is meeting their needs.
